The IMDb Movies & TV application for Android is inherently useful for entertainment lovers. Like the popular website, the IMDb application offers users many ways to find out new information about movies and television as well as access their ever-growing database of entertainment facts. This application offers several tabs at the top of the screen that let users browse through a variety of categories like Movies, TV, Celebs, Showtimes, and Watchlist, as well as a place to search the database.
The Movies section offers a few previews at the top of the page, along with some of the latest movies related news. It also offers information like the latest Box Office results, a list of movies that are coming out soon, the top 250 movies based on ratings by users, the Movie Meter (which shows what movies are currently being views on IMDb the most), a list of best picture Academy Award winners, and the list of the bottom 100 movies as rated by users (which currently includes such classics as From Justin to Kelly, Glitter, and Kazaam).
The TV Section offers a little less of the content than the movies section does, but it is interesting enough. The first section it offers is Popular TV, which I assume lists the fifty most popularly searched television shows in their database. Another section it offers is US TV Recaps where a few popular shows receive a much more detailed summary of the episodes' events and are organized by the date they aired. The last section offered in the TV category is US TV Tonight, which lists what shows will air at what time during prime time on the major networks.
The Celebs category offers two different options, STARmeter and Born Today. The STARmeter category shows the fifty most viewed actors/actresses on the website and it also shows how far up or down their viewing rank has moved. The Born Today section is pretty self-explanatory and just shows a list of celebrities who celebrate their birthday on any given day.
The Watchlist feature is used for people who have an account with IMDb or who want to create one. It allows users to create a list of movie or television titles that they would like to watch and keep track of.
The application also keeps a history of entries that you have views and what you have rated (for account users). The settings option allows you to set a location (for show time searches), pick with IMDb website you wish to draw information from (US or UK), and which Amazon website (based on country) you want your app to be affiliated with in case you decide to buy a movie.
The Showtimes section allows users to search for movie listings near them and occasionally certain listings will have a link from which the user can buy tickets. I chose not to test this feature, so if you choose to use it proceed with caution.
Overall, this application is fairly useful and has an abundance of information ready to access. I imagine, however, that I, as well as most other users, will benefit the most from the search feature. This application is most useful for trying to find the name of an actor in the show you are watching, looking for what other movies you have seen a certain person in, finding out when a certain movie first came out, and finding out how old that one celebrity is.
